Airport Noise Monitoring Systems

Noise in the community around an airport as a result of general airport operations and aircraft movement can result complaints that must be dealt with efficiently to avoid escalation. A noise monitoring system must provide the following facilities:

  • Accurately measure the noise levels
  • Allow identification of the noise source
  • Show real-time noise levels
  • Produce reports of historical noise levels
  • Ease the handling of complaints

Airport Noise

Our complete noise monitoring systems consist of both fixed (installed) and portable noise monitors, which connect back to a central computer running the Noise-Hub software. Flight information, weather information and other related data can be integrated with the noise measurements.

Typical System

All airport noise monitoring systems are tailored for the airport in question and depend on the number of runways, flights and the motivation behind installing a system (long term monitoring of noise, complaint handling, assessing a noise reduction program, planning consent).

A typical system would consist of a number of fixed noise monitoring terminals. These are permanently installed at key locations and record the noise levels continuously. A small airport with a single runway would have two or three monitors, a large airport with multiple runways would tend have between six and ten permanent noise monitors. The monitors would be connected either permanently or via a telephone line back to the Noise-Hub server.

Airports also tend to have one or two portable noise monitors. These have a similar noise processing system to the fixed monitors, but have lower levels of weather protection and of course are designed to be easily moved between locations. These portable units are used for assessing areas not covered by the fixed monitors and for placing close to, or within, a complainant's premises.
